There were strong statements made about the Chinese smartphone markets being more receptive to true open source platforms that encourage more of local flavours rather than iOS and even default Android system. On the contrary the sales statistics reveal a whole different story in China for the year of 2012. Samsung dethrones Apple and Lenovo to capture the top spot but Apple still managed a decent position with third in the market. The other top smartphone vendors in China include Huawei and Coolpad. The biggest looser overall is Nokia that literally fell down to a mere 10% of sales compared to 2011.
Nokia was a dominant player in the year 2011 as well with its symbian range of phone capturing a staggering 29.9% in the Chinese markets but the story literally took a U turn in 2012 where Nokia could capture a mere 3.7%. Samsung put on an impressive show with a strong presence by capturing 30.06% with the closest competitor in second being Lenovo with just 13.2% and Apple in second with 11%. Huawei and Coolpad managed 9.9% and 9.7% respectively.
With the recent reports from Flurry confirming that China now surpassed US with most number of Smartphones sold all major brands are turning their eyes towards China to push their smartphones. Flurry claims that China will contribute to 40% of overall global smartphone sales in the year 2017 which shows the importance of having a dominating presence in the country.
